New Marine Technician Course Begins June 27 at Middlesex Community College
March 30, 2023 (Middletown, Conn.) — Middlesex Community College announces a new eight-week program to train future marine technicians. The Fundamentals of Marine Service course begins on June 27 and will be offered at an introductory reduced tuition rate of $1,500, which is $1,000 off the regular course fee.
"This course helps fill the need of numerous year-long work opportunities in the high-demand marine service trade industry in the state," said Michelle Fuhrman, Middlesex director of Workforce Development.
Students will build foundational skills used in several marine careers during a combination of classroom sessions at the Middletown campus as well as hands-on training experience at Portland Boat Works in nearby Portland, Conn.
"As another excellent example of how the college responds to industry and community needs, we have partnered with the Connecticut Marine Trades Association (CMTA) as well as a private community partner that generously offered us to use their marina as our training site for hands-on learning. This is truly a win-win for the community," said Kimberly Hogan, Middlesex interim CEO.
Students enrolled in the inaugural program will learn about boating basics, electrical, plumbing, and propulsion systems, as well as marine engines, riggings, and structural materials.
"The CMTA is proud to support Middlesex Community College and the beginning of the marine tech program," said Jen Kawecki, managing director of CMTA, an organization of marine professionals that serves the recreational boating community in Connecticut and beyond.
To support the advancement of the marine trades program in Connecticut, Kawecki said the CMTA is also offering a $1,500 scholarship for one student to attend the course.
