DETROIT - If there were a Mount Rushmore of Detroit television news anchors, he might be on it alongside the likes of Bill Bonds, Carmen Harlan, Diana Lewis and Huel Perkins, just to name a few.

WDIV-TV’s, Devin Scillian, announced his retirement live on the air on the 6:00 newscast last night.

Scillian has been a fixture on Channel 4 in Detroit since he became a reporter there in 1995, moving to the anchor desk a year later.

Scillian has been on news assignments all over the world, from Beijing to Moscow to Jerusalem. He has also reported from six Olympic games.

The 3-time Edward R. Murrow Award winner will sign off for the last time on Friday, December 13, 2024.

“My wife and I laughed when I came to Detroit in 1995, we thought we’d have a cup of coffee and then move on. Well, the waitress kept refilling our cups and we found a very rich and lovely life here for us and our four children,” Scillian said on the air as he made his announcement.

Scillian is also the author of 22 children’s books and is a singer/songwriter who has released three albums of original songs and has a band, Arizona Son.

The 61-year old was born in Kansas. He and his family live in Grosse Pointe Park in Metro Detroit.

Four other longtime journalists, Bernie Smilovitz, Rod Meloni, Paula Tutman and Mara MacDonald, retired from WDIV this past July.

And back in March 2022, Detroit TV news lost two more legends in Huel Perkins and Monica Gayle, who retired from WJBK-TV, FOX 2.
